Why I advise against advertising without this in place first

I've spoken to plenty of landscapers who tried ads at some point. Set up themselves, or a boost button on Facebook, a few hundred euros in, and nothing after two weeks. Conclusion: ads don't work for my business.

In almost every one of those conversations I see the same thing missing: there was no content, or at most a sporadic post from months ago.

Why that matters so much

More than ninety percent of the landscaping businesses I come across have no consistent content, or none at all. Makes sense, their trade is building gardens, not posting. But that lack of visibility has a direct effect on what ads cost.

An ad platform judges, among other things, how known and trusted a brand already is. A business with no online history, no posts, no recognition, pays more per click and per lead than a business that's already visible. Consistent content simply makes ads cheaper, before a single euro even goes into a campaign.

Someone who starts without that foundation pays top price for a few hundred euros of budget, sees little result, and concludes that ads don't work. While the problem was never the ads — it was what should have been in place beforehand.

What I mean by ad readiness

Not: already having a thousand followers. Rather: a minimum level of recognisability. A few months of regular content, project photos, a handful of reviews, something that gives an unfamiliar visitor a reason to trust before he clicks an ad.

Without that foundation, the same ad produces different numbers than it would with one. Not because the ad is different, but because the visitor seeing it has no reason at all to trust that this business is good at what it does.

What I build first because of this

On a new project, I don't start by opening the ad budget all the way up. First a few weeks of content, testimonials, project proof. That's not a delay for the sake of it — it's exactly the piece that determines whether the ads that follow perform at a reasonable price or not.

Once that's in place, the same ads perform better at a lower cost per lead. Not because I'm doing something clever in the campaign settings, but because the visitor seeing the ad already recognises something.

The lesson in this

When a landscaper tells me he's already tried ads and it didn't work, I always ask first: what content and reviews were in place at the time. Usually the answer is: little to nothing.

That's not a criticism. It's exactly why I never advertise without getting this in order first.
